After an earlier report pegged him for the film, Jet Li has officially signed on for Vin Diesel's "xXx: The Return of Xander Cage." According to The Hollywood Reporter, Diesel's character will assemble a team of fighters and Li will lead a group of his own against them. It is unclear if Li will be the sole villain of the film.

"We are extremely excited to have Jet Li join the cast of 'xXx 3: The Return of Xander Cage' as Raif, who is pitted against Vin Diesel’s Xander Cage, and watch these two in action as they raise the bar with some of the most incredible stunts on film," Revolution COO Scott Hemming said in a statement.

Li joins Diesel, Samuel L. Jackson and UFC star Conor McGregor in the film. Reportedly, “Vampire Diaries” star Nina Dobrev, “Orange Is the New Black’s” Ruby Rose and Bollywood actress Deepika Padukone are also in talks to star.

Diesel headlined the 2002 original as an extreme-sports enthusiast/stuntman who becomes a reluctant spy for the National Security Agency, assigned to infiltrate a group of terrorists. While the film received mixed reviews, it grossed more than $277 million worldwide, leading Columbia Pictures to greenlight a sequel, which was made without Diesel or director Rob Cohen. It was a box-office flop.

“xXx: The Return of Xander Cage” began shooting in the Philippines in December with D.J. Caruso, and will move production to Toronto for February, where it will shoot through to May.
