Image Comics' upcoming graphic novel, Jesusfreak by writer Joe Casey and artist Benjamin Marra, will see the Son of God become a stone cold killer and Master of Kung Fu as he doles out punishment (and decapitations) to his adversaries with his fists, hands and a mighty sword.

Deadline's Hero Nation revealed the first set of preview pages for Jesusfreak, and Marra's imagery recalls classic action comics like Marvel's Master of Kung Fu and Savage Sword of Conan, along with Dark Horse's 300. Readers may be surprised and shocked to see Jesus slice off his enemies' heads as they lay in a pile of blood on the floor.

Jesusfreak is less inspired by any strict religious traditions and is instead more concerned with exploring the unique tension that exists between depicting a mythical figure and a historical figure – a tension that is compounded when, for many, they’re considered the same person,” Casey said in a statement last year when Jesusfreak was first announced. “It’s also a chance for Marra and I to indulge in a specific style of hard-pulp storytelling that we think perfectly fits this material.”

DC canceled a similar comic starring Jesus ChristSecond Coming by writer Mark Russell and artist Richard Pace, though it would have taken a more comedic take on the Deity. However, DC did grant the rights to Second Coming back to Russell and Pace so they could shop it to other publishers.

Jesusfreak, by Joe Casey and Benjamin Marra, goes on sale March 20 from Image Comics.
