The jig is up for Jessica Lange: The two-time Emmy winner has headlined all three seasons of FX's American Horror Story to date, and she'll be back for next year's fourth version — but after that, she's leaving the horror behind.

"It ends up being a lot of time during the year being committed to something," she told Entertainment Weekly about her reasons for leaving the FX horror series. "I haven't done that for a long time. It's like doing a stage play between the rehearsal and the run. This is a six-month commitment every year. That will be four years in a row. I want to have more time to myself I guess. Once it's over and I have a full year ahead of me with nothing to do, who knows? It might not have been the best decision. But I think four years doing something is a sufficient amount of time."

Lange's departure is a blow for American Horror Story and its fans, but on the bright side, the show constantly reinvents itself, telling a new story with new characters every year. Lange will be missed, but there's reason to believe the show can go on past any individual actor.
