Jessica Jones star David Tennant recently expressed doubt that the Netflix series' original villain, Kilgrave, will appear in any upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe film or TV projects.

Tennant managed fans' expectations surrounding a comeback by the mind-controlling baddie during a Fan Expo Boston 2022 Q&A session. The Scottish actor said it would be "difficult" to engineer Kilgrave's return, citing the character's "specific" relationship with Jessica Jones herself. At the same time, Tennant made it clear that he'd be willing to reprise the role again if the writers on Marvel Studios' payroll could find a way to make it work.

While shows like Jessica Jones that originally aired on Netflix were initially promoted as taking place in mainstream MCU continuity, their current status within the canon remains unclear. Marvel Studios recently began reintegrating at least some heroes and villains from the so-called "Defenders Saga" into its big and small screen productions, further muddying the waters. Charlie Cox reprised the role of Matt Murdock in Spider-Man: No Way Home in December 2021, with his Daredevil co-star Vincent D'Onofrio returning as Wilson Fisk in Hawkeye the same month. Cox will next appear as Murdock's costumed alter-ego Daredevil in She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, further cementing the Man Without Fear's place in the MCU.

Is Jessica Jones Headed to the MCU?

Meanwhile, rumors persist that Jessica Jones will be the next Defenders Saga character to rejoin the MCU. Inside sources recently claimed that upcoming Hawkeye spinoff Echo will pave the way for the superhero turned detective's return. These sources allege that Daredevil will feature in three episodes of Echo, during which he will be searching for Jones. Should this rumor prove accurate, it's unclear whether Jones will physically appear in Echo nor is it certain whether she will be portrayed by the original series' star, Krysten Ritter, once again. As with Cox's Daredevil, it's also not yet known how much (if any) of Jessica Jones' Netflix history will remain intact should she show up in either Echo or any future MCU projects.

At least one person within the Marvel Studios fold is openly in favor of Jessica Jones' return: She-Hulk director Kat Coiro. Coiro recently described Jones as a character who would make "a good addition" to Jennifer Walters' world at some point in the future. Marvel Studios has not yet officially commented on Jessica Jones' mooted reincorporation into the MCU's canon, however.

Seasons 1-3 of Jessica Jones are currently streaming on Disney+.
