Jerry Seinfeld has come out in defense of James Gunn in a recent interview. The Seinfeld star also made a point of calling out Roseanne Barr.

Seinfeld responded to a question about director James Gunn's very public firing by Disney in an interview with The New York Times. Gun was fired from directing Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 in July when a number of his years-old tweets containing pedophilia and rape jokes were dug up and recirculated by right-wing agitators. Disney swiftly removed Gunn from directing the film, leading to heavy backlash from the cast of the franchise and various big names throughout the entertainment industry. Dave Bautista has even threatened to quit the series if Gunn's script isn’t used.

Seinfeld defended Gunn, saying: “I didn’t read the jokes, but if they’re jokes, it doesn’t matter.” The comedian then alluded to the Roseanne Barr controversy from earlier this year. An overtly racist tweet from Barr caused a massive upheaval at ABC, which led to the cancellation of her Roseanne revival.

“I guess Roseanne Barr thought she was being funny,” said Seinfeld, "but it wasn’t funny -- and if it’s offensive and not funny, then it’s not a joke. But any comedian that doesn’t understand that dynamic, you’re finished anyway."

Seinfeld further explained his long-held belief that jokes are simply jokes and nothing more. The comedian has been the center of some debate himself in recent years. He has spoken about the effect political correctness has on comedy, and has been called out for still employing stereotypical jokes in his routines.

"Jokes are not real," said Seinfeld. "People assume that when you say something that you believe it. It’s purely comedic invention. You know, I do this whole bit about Pop-Tarts and how much I love them. I don’t love Pop-Tarts. It’s just funny. It’s funny to say it, so I say it.”
