The upcoming episode, entitled "Smile Like You Mean it," marks the second installment in the show's three-episode Joker-themed mini-arc that revisits the cackling Jerome, who was killed back at the beginning of "Gotham" Season 2, and his growing throng of violent grinning acolytes.

But in a prequel show that focuses on the origins of various characters in the Batman mythos, the main question in fans minds remains whether Jerome, or one of his disciples, will eventually become the legendary adversary that young master Bruce will face in the future in his guise as Batman.

Returning Monday at 8 p.m. ET/PT on Fox, “Gotham” stars Ben McKenzie as Detective Jim Gordon, David Mazouz as young Bruce Wayne, Sean Pertwee as Alfred Pennyworth, Camren Bicondova as young Selina Kyle, Donal Logue as Harvey Bullock, Robin Lord Taylor as Oswald Cobblepot, Cory Michael Smith as Edward Nygma, Morena Baccarin as Leslie Thompkins and Jada Pinkett Smith as Fish Mooney.
