Actor Jeremy Tardy has left his recurring role as Rashid Bakr on Netflix's Dear White People, claiming that he experienced racial discrimination from the series' producer Lionsgate. In response, Lionsgate issued a statement saying that Tardy's departure was due to a "purely financial negotiation regarding deal terms."

Tardy announced his exit from Dear White People on a Facebook post, sharing a full account of his experience on the show and how it led to his decision.

"After being offered to return for several episodes my team was notified that our counter offer would not be considered and that the initial offer was the 'best and final'," Tardy wrote in his post. "This news was disturbing because one of my white colleagues — being a true ally — revealed that they too had received the same initial offer and had successfully negotiated a counter offer."

He ended the post by calling out what he saw as "politically correct lip service and symbolic gestures" from Lionsgate and Netflix, saying, "The fact that this has occurred behind the scenes of a show which purports to address systemic issues of racism and discrimination displays the very epitome of hypocrisy."

Lionsgate's response reiterated a commitment to equality and noted, "We are very proud of Dear White People and its place in the national conversation about racial equality and social justice and we look forward to beginning production on its fourth season."

Dear White People is a satirical drama/comedy centered on the lives of Black students at an Ivy League university. The first three seasons are currently streaming on Netflix, with a fourth season announced.
