Following a near-fatal snowplow accident, actor and musician Jeremy Renner is on the mend, thanks to his medical staff and cutting-edge technology.

Renner shared a brief video of his physical therapy routine in an Instagram story that involved several round vibrating devices attached to his calf and thigh, his flannel slippers and “Lady Madonna” by The Beatles playing over the clip. On New Year's Day at his family’s Tahoe home, not long after helping a stranger stuck in the snow, Renner jumped in the way of his 1,500lbs Snowcat as it began sliding toward his nephew. The snowplow ran over his leg, breaking over 30 bones and crushing his chest. Renner experienced significant blood loss, but his neighbor, a doctor, triaged his wounds until emergency services arrived, and he was airlifted to the hospital. The next day he underwent surgery for blunt chest trauma and remained in critical but stable condition in the intensive care unit. Two days after the incident, the actor posted a selfie from his hospital bed. He spent over two weeks in the hospital before being allowed to return home.

Jeremy Renner Physical Therapy Electric Stimulation Workout

Jeremy Renner's Recovery

Renner is still in the midst of rehabilitation therapy. The process pictured in his Instagram story is known as electrical muscle stimulation, which utilizes electrical impulses to stimulate a pattern of muscle contraction and relaxation to increase blood flow and trigger muscle growth. Auspiciously, he has posted several positive messages on social media about equipment and routines that he has incorporated into his daily life on the road to recovery.

This is not Renner’s first serious injury. While filming the 2018 comedy Tag, the star was performing his own stunt when the script called for his character to climb a tall stack of chairs that were not appropriately rigged. The stack of chairs toppled, and he fell, fracturing his right elbow and left wrist. Many reports mistakenly said he injured himself on the set of Avengers: Infinity War. He later wore bright green casts, and his broken arms were digitally replaced for the remainder of filming.

Renner began his acting career in the 1990s and went on to portray both hero and villain in earlier blockbuster films like 28 Weeks Later and S.W.A.T. before getting a best lead Oscar nomination for The Hurt Locker and a best supporting nomination for The Town. He was cast as Clint Barton, a.k.a. Hawkeye, in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and made his debut appearance in Thor. The actor continued to play Hawkeye for five films and one Disney+ streaming series. Renner is also a musician and has released two EPs, one single, and a cover of “House of the Rising Sun” used in Netflix’s The Umbrella Academy Season Three.

Renner’s Paramount+ streaming show, Mayor of Kingstown, premiered its second season on January 15 and has a 93% audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes. His latest show, Rennervations, a miniseries about renovating unique vehicles, will drop on Disney+ in early 2023.
