Marvel Cinematic Universe star Jeremy Renner is open to starring in a Hawkeye solo film -- but only on one condition. The Avengers star, who has appeared in four MCU films so far, would be up for the task if Marvel doesn't wait too long for it.

Asked by South China Morning Post if he would star in a Hawkeye standalone film, Renner said, “It would be a wonderful thing. Just don’t wait too long! I don’t want to be in my 50s in tights.”

Renner's time constraint gives Marvel about three years to get moving on a Hawkeye movie, as he turns 47 next month. The actor was 40 when he made his MCU debut in Thor in a brief cameo almost seven years ago. He has since starred in Avengers, Avengers: Age of Ultron and Captain America: Civil War.

These previous films have only offered a fleeting glimpse of Hawkeye's life outside the team, as he was brainwashed in Avengers. However, Age of Ultron introduced audiences to his family, including his wife Laura and three children. In Civil War, he left his family behind to join Captain America's crusade and subsequently went underground after the signing of the Sokovia Accords.

Renner is slated to appear in Avengers: Infinity War and the as-yet-untitled Avengers 4. After that, Hawkeye's future is unclear; Marvel has not yet announced any films post-Phase 4, though Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige has said the studio has "another 20 movies on the docket."

Some recent set photos have provided some clues as to Hawkeye's direction in the final two Avengers films. Renner was spotted on the Avengers 4 set back in October, where he appeared to be wearing the character’s Ronin outfit. The earlier photos showed Renner wearing black boots with a gold trim, which match up with his Ronin identity from the comics, where Barton traded his signature bow and arrows for twin katanas in the fallout from Civil War in order to keep his identity a secret. Between this new costume and the character’s shorter haircut and arm tattoo, it appears that Clint Barton will indeed assume the Ronin identity, but we can't know for certain until Infinity War hits theaters in May.

Debuting in theaters on May 4, 2018, Avengers: Infinity War is a production of Marvel Studios directed by Joe and Anthony Russo starring Robert Downey Jr., Josh Brolin, Mark Ruffalo, Tom Hiddleston, Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Jeremy Renner, Chris Pratt, Elizabeth Olsen, Sebastian Stan, Benedict Cumberbatch, Paul Bettany, Samuel L. Jackson, Cobie Smulders, Benedict Wong, Zoe Saldana, Karen Gillan, Vin Diesel, Dave Bautista, Pom Klementieff, Scarlett Johansson, Tom Holland and Anthony Mackie. Avengers 4 is expected to hit theaters on May 3, 2019.
