Although Wednesday only sees its heroine become emotional for one scene, star Jenna Ortega said she actually cried while filming it.

While appearing on Hot Ones, Ortega was asked about memorable moments while working with Victor Dorobantu, who plays the disembodied hand Thing in the series. She brought up a scene in the seventh episode, "If You Don't Woe Me by Now," where Thing is grievously injured, and Wednesday takes him to Uncle Fester (Fred Armisen) to save him. "It's the first and only time Wednesday cries," Ortega explained. "And I went to reach out my hand to him, and he pet my hand, like he was comforting me. And I actually started crying. Like, I restarted the line because it actually made me sad. And we just laughed, and that was a real bonding moment for Victor and I."

Making Thing in Netflix's Wednesday

Dorobantu is a magician from Ploisesti, Romania, who was cast mainly due to his manual dexterity. He discussed the challenges in bringing the longtime Addams family member to life, saying, "It's pretty hard to create from start to end. Even the way he talks, it's pretty hard to find movements that can express feelings. For example, in love, or angry. Everything is pretty hard when you do it with a real actor." He added that the production used CGI sparingly when depicting Thing, instead employing "paint out" effects to remove everything past Dorobantu's hand.

First released on Nov. 23, Wednesday has been a massive streaming hit for Netflix, with its first episode earning the title of the most watched premiere in 2022. The series received mixed reviews, though critics praised Ortega's performance, which earned the actor Golden Globe and Screen Actors' Guild Award nominations. Netflix announced Season 2 in January 2023 with a video set to a remix of "Bloody Mary" by Lady Gaga.

Wednesday has kept Season 2's story under wraps thus far. Co-creators Alfred Gough and Miles Miller said they wrote the first season with no loose ends so that its follow-up could focus on its own mystery, which appears to be Wednesday's unknown stalker. Ortega herself has said she hopes Season 2 will focus more on Wednesday herself and not put the character in the center of a love triangle. Conversely, Emma Myers, who plays Wednesday's roommate Enid Sinclair, is open to the possibility of their characters becoming romantically involved. However, she agrees that Wednesday "needs to take her season of singleness. She just had a whole fiasco with her men, she's got to lay it off for a little bit."

Wednesday is available to stream on Netflix.
