Fans of the DC Extended Universe's Wonder Woman films may have to wait a bit longer for the title character's third film and the planned spinoff movie about the Amazons, as Wonder Woman 1984 director and co-writer Patty Jenkins has temporarily halted work on both.

While speaking to Total Film magazine, Jenkins explained why she paused work on the two films, stating that she wants to completely understand the aftermath of the current coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. This may also change the plotline of Wonder Woman 3, which, along with the Amazon film, is part of an arc Jenkins has planned.

"I’ve really hit the pause button," Jenkins said. "Because the truth is, where that plotline was coming from was our state of being six months ago. And so I want to make sure that I’m totally absorbing whatever the result of this pandemic is."

"We’re not starting to work on that movie right away," the filmmaker continued."I’m hoping to do this Amazon movie before we do the third Wonder Woman. And I may not do either of them. You never know what will happen in this world, you know? But yes, I think the plotline will stay very similar, probably. But I want to make sure it’s influenced by all of this."

Work on the two films isn't the only thing affected by the pandemic. Wonder Woman 1984's release schedule was also altered due to concerns regarding COVID-19, first changing from its intended premiere of June 5 to Aug. 14 before being given a new release date of Oct. 2.
