Actor Jeffrey Wright says the version of Jim Gordon he plays in The Batman is more likely to take action than other versions of the character on screen.

Wright also voices The Watcher for the Disney+ animated series What If...?, and says he does see a little similarity between the cosmic observer and the determined police officer, telling GamesRadar, "They are [both] holding the scales, so to speak. They're definitely characters who are concerned about justice and justness."

But Wright notes, "I think Gordon is much less reticent, he's very much in the thick of things with The Batman so they're different in that regard."

Gotham City Police Commissioner James Gordon has been Batman's ally and confidant from the first tale in 1939's Detective Comics #27. The Batman is set during the Caped Crusader's second year as a crimefighter, well before Gordon has risen through the ranks to the top spot. In the film, Detective Gordon and Batman, played by Robert Pattinson, are on the trail of a serial killer -- The Riddler, played by Paul Dano. And Gordon is expected to be a key part of the planned HBO Max prequel TV series, set during the first year of Batman's career. However, no casting for the show has been announced.

What If...? premieres Aug. 11 on Disney+. The Batman arrives in theaters March 4, 2022.
