"Smiley Bone, Fone Bone, and their Rat Creature pal, Bartleby, take a group of young scouts to a legendary landmark that the Bone cousins found when they were kids," Scholastic's description of the anthology reads. "They share stories around a campfire, spinning tales of trips to the moon, the delights of quiche, an imagined monster come to life, and an encounter with the two stupid Rat Creatures gone hilariously wrong!"

A Brief History of Jeff Smith's Bone

Smith began writing, drawing and self-publishing Bone in 1991, and the series wrapped up in 2004. Featuring a mixture of epic fantasy and cartoon comedy reminiscent of Disney, Bone starred the three Bone brothers as they were chased out of their hometown of Boneville and found themselves in a magical valley. The story won ten Eisner Awards and eleven Harvey Awards, and is widely regarded as one of the comic book industry's biggest independent success stories. A Netflix adaptation of Bone was in the works but abruptly canceled in 2022 due to internal changes at Netflix Animation. More Tall Tales serves as the sequel to Tall Tales, which was published in 2010 and repackaged Stupid, Stupid Rat-Tails: The Adventures of Big Johnson Bone, Frontier Hero -- a prequel to Smith's long-running Bone series -- with new stories.

Aside from Bone, Smith is known for his work on RASL, a science fiction noir graphic novel published in 2013, and the prehistoric webcomic TUKI, which was Kickstarted in 2022 and features a gripping tale about the first human to leave Africa. In the world of superhero comics, Smith is also responsible for Shazam!: The Monster Society of Evil, a 2007 series starring DC's Captain Marvel.

More Tall Tales: A Graphic Novel goes on sale Sept. 5. A CBR exclusive question and answer session with Smith and Sniegoski will be published next week.
