Summary

  • There has always been an everlasting hatred between the Sith and Jedi, leading to galaxy-wide conflicts.
  • In one instance, however, the Jedi and Sith allied; in Star Wars: Fate of the Jedi they combined forces to combat the formidable entity Abeloth.
  • Abeloth's power was terrifying enough that Sith and Jedi set aside their differences to confront her united.

In Star Wars, there is one constant: The Sith hate the Jedi and vice versa. In practically every story, be it canon or in Legends, the Jedi and Sith always come into conflict, often with catastrophic results. It's no exaggeration to say that their enmity is responsible for practically every major conflict in the galaxy's history. The Sith were willing to team up with the Jedi in Star Wars: Fate of the Jedi to battle the powerful Force entity Abeloth in this Star Wars Legends saga.

Debuting in 2009 with Outcast, the ten-book series focused on Luke Skywalker's journey to stop the Force entity Abeloth, who began rampaging through the galaxy in an attempt to bring chaos to the cosmos, and become a true God of the Force. Her powers enabled her to accomplish feats that previously had never been seen, such as inducing psychosis in several Jedi to make them believe everyone they knew was an imposter. She also fed on despair and fear, which explained why she caused so much destruction and conflict. That, combined with her ability to inhabit more than one body at a time, made killing her nearly impossible.

Updated March 3, 2024 by Joshua M. Patton: The television series Ahsoka ended in a way fans didn't expect, and it paved the way for the Legends story of Abeloth to become canon, with some slight changes. Baylon Skoll felt a massive power in the Force, and he ended his journey looking at two giant effigies tied to Abeloth's story. If Ahsoka returns for a Season 2 it's possible the Jedi, Sith and other opposing factions will be forced to unite to stop her. What's the Status of Earth in Star Wars?
While it doesn't play a major part in the Star Wars universe, Earth has appeared in canon and non-canon material in a galaxy far, far away.

As the series progresses, it reveals more about Abeloth's backstory, which ties into the Ones from Star Wars: The Clone Wars. Abeloth was the Mother of a family that consisted of the Father, the Son and the Daughter, although her origin is a bit more complicated. Initially, she was a mere mortal servant who ingratiated herself into their family. However, as she grew older, and her family didn't, the Mother sought to become more powerful.

She used a pair of Force nexuses that the Son and the Daughter tapped into to empower herself. She became corrupted by the power and turned evil. The Mother then became Abeloth and was sealed away on a planet in the Maw, while the Father, Son and Daughter eventually fled to Mortis. But over time, Abeloth became part of a vicious cycle in the galaxy, breaking free to cause chaos and destruction and prompting the Son and Daughter to join forces and seal her away once more. Of course, that became complicated when the Ones died during the Clone Wars.

In the time period of Fate of the Jedi, Abeloth started to break free, first hinting at her existence by driving a number of Jedi insane. Those Jedi had once been near her in the Maw during the Yuuzhan Vong war, which was how Luke and his son, Ben, began to track her down. During this time, the Lost Tribe of the Sith also began to emerge into the wider galaxy. Having sensed Luke's presence, they sent a strike team to hunt him down. It was through that series of events the Sith also offered to help stop Abeloth, claiming she was also driving their own apprentices mad.

Unfortunately for the Sith Order, it soon became clear the Lost Tribe was way over its head, as Abeloth revealed herself to be far more powerful than any Sith or Jedi. She single-handedly destroyed the capital of the Lost Tribe and eventually converted much of the Tribe to be her minions, either through brainwashing or intimidation. However, that was a lie perpetuated by the Lost Tribe, whose real plan was to find a way to study and control Abeloth.

Of course, the Lost Tribe weren't the only Sith out there, as Darth Krayt, the leader of the One Sith from the Star Wars: Legacy comics, also became aware of Abeloth's existence. Unlike the Lost Tribe, Krayt understood how dangerous of a threat she was. Risking the exposure of himself and his One Sith order, Krayt aided Luke and the Jedi in ensuring Abeloth was no longer a direct threat. That was accomplished by three of her separate bodies being killed at the same time by different groups.

While they had succeeded in vanquishing her, even that was not enough to permanently kill Abeloth. Luke mused that the Jedi and Sith might have to take on the roles left behind by the Son and the Daughter. The entire Fate of the Jedi series showed just how dangerous Abeloth was when even the Sith were willing to put their animosity with the Jedi aside to defeat her.
