Few relationships in the world of comics could shock fans more than that between Emma Frost, Cyclops, Jean Grey, and Wolverine. What started off as a standard Scott/Jean couple became all the more interesting when it grew into a Scott/Jean/Logan throuple in the current X-Men line.

The possible addition of Emma to the mix (is "quadrouple" a term yet?) and the homoerotic undertones between Scott and Logan open up a whole array of combinations. The best is Jean/Emma -- aka the couple we never knew we wanted.

Homosexuality and polyamory are contentious themes in the present X-fandom. While there has clearly and explicitly been flirtatious dialogue exchanged between all four members of the possible quadrouple/polycule, the relationships persist in an ambiguity that fuels both sides to the raging argument. Depending on who's asked, the characters could share a purely platonic and sexless relationship completely within the convention of comics past, or else the mutant island of Krakoa is a bacchanalia unrestrained by any and all taboos and mores.

Regardless, an Emma/Jean romance is at the very least possible. The two mutant telepaths shared a common romantic link in their history through Scott Summers. Much of Emma's relationship with Scott grappled with his lingering feelings for Jean and Jean's resurrection proved a major obstacle to progressing the arc of Emma and Scott's romance. The best way forward may be to get Jean and Emma together.

Jean says goodbye to Scott and Logan before joining Emma in Storm's mind

The move wouldn't be without precedent. There are hints Cyclops and Wolverine are not just romantic with Jean in a polyamorous relationship, but actively engaging in a romance with each other as well. Given the men's romance overcoming their previous rivalry, there's no doubt that Emma and Jean could replicate the same magic. The big difference may be that the two telepaths are actually pretty perfect for each other.

Giant-Size X-Men: Jean Grey and Emma Frost #1 partnered the pair of psychics on a mission into Storm's mind to save her and even though most of the adventure was rendered without dialogue, there was a palpable chemistry between them. While Jean is much more the empath, taking a diplomatic approach, Emma is more abrasive and self-assertive. At the same time, both women share qualities. Jean's power and stints with a darker persona prove just how assertive she can be and Emma has served as the voice of reason to other X-Men's impulses more than once.

The most obvious point of comparison also serves as a meaningful sticking point for how their differences compliment. While both are high-level telepaths, capable of engaging in mental communion on a planetary scale, Emma's ability to become psychic-resistant in her diamond form could make her something of an enigma to Jean. Jean, being so used to having all the answers available to her if she only wishes to reach out and grab them, could see something intriguing in Emma she never shared with anyone else before.

Much of the romantic subtext at play is exactly that -- subtext. Many of the journalists and fans covering the X-Men relationships are accused of "inventing" elements that flat-out aren't there, but the truth of the matter is that there is something there, something that can be played with as a potential idea for future stories. The groundwork is certainly fertile for an Emma/Jean relationship, and approaching the idea with an open mind just might reveal how wonderful and meaningful such stories could be when made explicit.
