Javier Bardem in Talks to Play Universal's Frankenstein

New life continues to surge through Universal Pictures' long-developing reboot of its revered creature series, as Javier Bardem is reportedly in talks to star as Frankenstein.

According to Variety, it's unclear which film in the new interconnected monster universe Bardem would appear in first. The Hollywood Reporter adds it's also a bit fuzzy as to whether the Oscar winner would play Dr. Frankenstein or his monster. Universal has a "Bride of Frankenstein" film in development, but Variety contends Bardem would likely play a role in another film before getting his own spinoff.

The star of "No Country For Old Men" previously had been in negotiations to star as Dr. Jekyll opposite Tom Cruise in Universal's "The Mummy," but Russell Crowe ultimately landed that role.

Overseen by Alex Kurtzman and Chris Morgan, the shared monsters movie universe kicks off next year with "The Mummy." A reboot of "The Invisible Man," starring Johnny Depp is also in the works.

Bardem will also step into a different next summer with "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales."
