The following contains major spoilers for Batman: Legends of Gotham #1, available now from DC.

Jason Todd reveals in the Batman: Legends of Gotham one-shot that he hopes to secretly corner Bane and kill the masked villain for murdering Alfred.

The admission comes after Red Hood briefly allies himself with Batman's Outsiders on a mission to acquire a data cache related to the criminal organization Leviathan. The Outsiders -- composed of Black Lightning and Katana -- continuously doubt Jason's motives, and they question his plan of action as he attends a criminal auction alongside several villains bidding on the cache, including Bane.

When Jason refuses to cooperate with his temporary comrades and seemingly pilfers the data for himself, Katana pursues him and demands to know what he truly wants. In a moment of rare openness, Jason admits that he was never concerned about the data and only sought it for a chance to get close to Bane and avenge Alfred. A flashback scene reveals a past heart-to-heart between the beloved butler and the second Robin, with Alfred encouraging Jason to not lose himself in anger and even giving him a secret code to the Bat-Computer -- "chili dogs."

The Fallout Of Alfred's Death

Alfred died at the hands of Bane in the "City of Bane" story arc in 2019's Batman #77. Despite his soul briefly reappearing in the recent Batman vs. Robin #4, Alfred has stayed deceased thus far, with every member of the Bat Family dealing with some degree of guilt or sadness following his demise.

Jason, for his part, attempted to kill a zombified Bane during his brief tenure as the leader of an undead Suicide Squad in Task Force Z but eventually discovered that the Bane he faced was an imposter. Since Task Force Z wrapped up in 2022, Jason has been wandering Gotham and the wider United States, alternating between chasing the Joker and attempting to bring Bane to justice for killing the Bat Family's gentle patriarch.

Batman: Legends of Gotham #1 is written by Andy Diggle, illustrated by Karl Mostert, colored by Romulo Fajardo Jr., lettered by Troy Peteri and features a main cover by Carmine di Giandomenico. The one-shot also has variant covers by Nathan Szerdy and David Nakayama. Batman: Legends of Gotham #1 is on sale now from DC.
