The following contains spoilers for Task Force Z #7, on sale now from DC Comics.

Jason Todd seemed to have turned things around recently. He became an enemy of his former mentor when he originally returned as the Red Hood. Now, however, he's finally redeemed himself in the eyes of Batman and the rest of the Bat-Family. It took a long time, but they've finally reconciled their differences. So much so, that Jason even stopped killing.

Unfortunately, Red Hood's latest mission has proven to be darker than he initially imagined. Although Batman himself sent him to investigate Gotham's growing zombie problem, Jason's time as leader of Task Force Z has turned him into an even worse killer than he was before.

Task Force Z 7 Jason Todd kills Zsasz

That's quite the bold claim, especially with how trigger-happy he was when he first came onto the scene as the Red Hood. The evidence is all there in Task Force Z #7 (by Matthew Rosenberg, Jack Herbert, Daniel HDR, Adriano Lucas, and Rob Leigh), as seen in the team's last-ditch plan to stop Bloom. Running low on recruits, and the life-giving Lazarus Resin they depend on, Jason proposed bringing in more members, but there's only one way someone joins Task Force Z.

Jason and the team went on a killing spree in this issue. Having met a similar team to their own a few issues ago, which new recruit KGBeast was a part of, they tracked them down this issue. Then, they murdered each one of them. They can only recruit dead supervillains to the team as, after all, giving them their lives back is the only hold they have over them. To that end, they planned to kill their latest picks for the team and then bring them back to life when the mission was done.

Even though they planned to bring them back as soon as they achieved their goal, this was still completely messed up. Having sworn off killing only recently, the Red Hood is back at it again and worse than ever. At least before he cared about why he was killing. He believed he was getting justice, in some misguided way. Now though, he's just doing it to get certain villains on his team. It showed even less regard for human life than ever before from the former Boy Wonder. It's also completely unnecessary. All they had to do was find some recently dead villains. There was no need for them to target the living like this.

Task Force Z 7 Jason Todd killed a bunch of villains unnecessarily

Jason may have sent out the members of Task Force Z to kill most of the targets, but he got his own hands dirty too. He went after Victor Zsasz. Rather than kill him quickly and show him mercy, he did it with his bare hands, slowly. He didn't even show any concern or remorse during the act. It was just a transaction to him.

The reason why Jason doesn't care at all about his victims in this issue is that he knows they'll be brought back to life straight after. Even if you forget the trauma that process would put a person through, a trauma he knows all too well, it's still totally wrong. They had a limited supply of Lazarus Resin, to begin with, only enough to bring one person back permanently. Their next mission involved securing more, so the chances of them being able to resurrect everyone relied upon them performing flawlessly. Needless to say, the odds of that happening were always slim. He didn't seem to even consider any of this when he came up with the idea, yet these villains may have just been killed permanently.

That's exactly where the issue ends as well. Mr. Freeze took all the Lazarus Resin they had and brought himself back to life, leaving everyone else on the team dead. Since the mission was how they planned to get more, Jason effectively did just kill a bunch of villains for no reason. It wasn't even for any crimes like when he first started out as Red Hood. It was just pointless, thoughtless killing. There is still a chance that he can bring them back, however, the damage has already been done. Task Force Z is making Jason Todd even deadlier than he was before - because now he doesn't even care about who he kills.
