In 2018, Jason Statham will face off against a giant, man-eating prehistoric Megalodon in The Meg. We'll let that awesomeness sink in for a moment, and then readers can meet us below the jump for the first official image.

Statham seems about as pleased as anyone would be when faced with a once-thought extinct underwater behemoth. Then again, it doesn't look like "The Meg" is exactly happy to see him, either...

As far as the movie's plot is concerned, the star summed it up pretty succinctly for Empire, where the image debuted. "I play a former navy captain and diver," he explains. "I get hired to rescue a team of scientists who are trapped at the bottom of the sea in their research station by a giant shark. Then all hell breaks loose.”

Sold.

Based on Steven Alten's 1997 sci novel, The Meg was stuck in development hell for years. Eli Roth once expressed interest in the project, but eventually directorial duties went over to National Treasure's Jon Turteltaub. Next year will also supposedly see the release of Meg: Generations, the seventh title in Alten's ongoing shark saga, so there's plenty of source material for future Statham-helmed giant shark movies. (Fingers crossed!)

The Meg swims into theaters on August 10, 2018.
