A fourth Expendables film has been in the works for a while. In fact, development of a fourth instalment was announced shortly before the release of The Expendables 3 back in 2014. However, a number of issues ranging from creative differences to the departure of actor Terry Crews have made the future of The Expendables 4 questionable. Still, late last year, writer and star Sylvester Stallone announced that he had started to "cook up the next adventure."

According to The Illuminerdi and its sources, it appears that that adventure is a spinoff film that will shift focus from crew leader Barney Ross to his friend and right hand man, Lee Christmas, played by Jason Statham. That's not to say that Ross will not appear in the film, just that his appearance will be limited to a few scenes. Aside from Statham and Stallone, the tentatively titled The Expendables: A Christmas Story, written by Max Adams, already has Arnold Schwarzenegger and Tony Jaa attached with room for more of the franchise's largest stars to return.

It is currently uncertain who will direct the film. The director's seat has been offered to Duncan Jones (known for films such as Source Code), as well as D.J Caruso (known for films such as Disturbia and Eagle Eye). The aim is to begin filming some time in early 2020.

Although the Expendable films have had consistently mixed receptions, each instalment has been a box office success. The Expendables 3, for example, still earned $214 million worldwide on a budget of roughly $100 million, despite the fact that it was the most poorly received of the three films.
