Not content with being the man in charge of bringing the Muppets back to the big screen, How I Met Your Mother star Jason Segel has another cinematic resurrection planned: the romantic comedy.
Segel, who's no stranger to the genre considering both Mother and Forgetting Sarah Marshall (Oh, come on, it was pretty much a rom-com), is writing a new movie called Five-Year Engagement that he describes as,
a romantic comedy. Our goal is Annie Hall or When Harry Met Sally and if we get within their stratosphere of substance, we will be happy. It really dissects relationships and aims to show how complicated they are over a long period of time. This is a five-year period and in that time things change and morph and the power dynamic shifts and people wane and eyes wonder [sic] and you question everything and this movie is about that in a funny way, I hope.
Firstly, setting Annie Hall as your goal is pretty damn ambitious. Secondly, this sounds like Segel is entering his "comedian who has something to say about the human condition" period. Here's hoping it's not followed by the traditional "comedian gets so convinced that they have something to say that they forget how to be funny" period.
