The news, as always, is pouring hot and heavy from Hall H, with Comic-Con International playing host to Warner Bros. as the studio reveals news, footage and even a title change to the assembled fans.

As the studio's big DC Films presentation unfolded, Aquaman star Jason Momoa strode to the stage from the audience, trident in hand, to talk about his solo film. “The king is here,” Momoa proclaimed. A message from director James Wan, who is currently working on the movie in Australia, was then shown. “In a lot of ways this is an origin story, so I want the audience to experience Atlantis the first time Aquaman experiences it as well," Wan said in the video, a mix of concept art and comic book illustrations accompanying his words. “This is the reason for the theatrical experience.”

A short sequence from the film was then shown — two older men on a fishing boat then discovering Atlantean ships, followed by a shot of the world of Atlantis. Then, Arthur Curry (Momoa) holding a sword, talking to someone off screen and preparing to fight — then the logo. “That’s Ocean Master’s army,” Momoa explained of the ships shown in the footage later in the panel. “Black Manta’s got nothing like that. That’s my brother. I’m going to be fighting my brother.”

Few details are known about the plot of Aquaman, but Wan has promised a “swashbuckling action-adventure, sort of high seas adventure story” in the vein of 1980s classics like Raiders of the Lost Ark and Romancing the Stone. He's also teased that it’s “ultimately a quest story,” but has yet to reveal what the object of that search might be.

Arriving Dec. 21, 2018, Aquaman stars Jason Momoa as Aquaman, Amber Heard as Mera, Patrick Wilson as Orm/Ocean Master, Willem Dafoe as Nuidis Vulko, Nicole Kidman as Queen Atlanna, Dolph Lundgren as Nereus and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as Black Manta.
