What Is Jason Momoa's DCU Future?

Momoa has long been rumored to become the face of an upcoming Lobo live-action franchise, playing the titular role of the intergalactic bounty hunter. When asked by Variety about the possibility, Momoa declined to confirm anything, simply saying that "there might be other characters" he could play going forward. The actor teased a mystery DC project during an interview with CBR last November, saying that "comic book fans around the world are going to be very excited." Momoa is a known fan of Lobo, having previously talked about his admiration of the cosmic anti-hero that first appeared in DC Comics' Omega Men #3 in 1983. He further ignited speculation of potentially ditching his trusty trident for a Harley-Davidson when he revealed in an Instagram story that he had big news while professing his love for Gunn, Safran and Warner Bros. CEO David Zaslav.

DCU fans have been split over the potential of Momoa joining a Lobo project, with some fans expressing sadness and disappointment at the actor potentially leaving his Aquaman franchise role behind while others see his potential feature as "The Last Czarnian" to be an upgrade.

Should Momoa make the jump, it would be the latest in a series of dramatic shifts in the revamped DCU. Since Gunn and Safran took charge of DC Studios last October, Henry Cavill was ousted as Superman despite announcing his comeback as the Last Son of Krypton following his return cameo in Black Adam. DC also parted ways with Dwayne Johnson's Black Adam franchise amid reports of Warner Bros. executives expressing discontent with his hyping of Cavill's return as well as the film netting a big box-office loss. Additionally, DC scrapped Gal Gadot's Wonder Woman 3.

If Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom marks Momoa's last film in the franchise, it will end a long-standing run with the character that made him a household name in Hollywood. The actor first played Aquaman in the 2016 film Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice before reprising the role for Justice League and Peacemaker. Momoa stars in the upcoming Aquaman sequel alongside Amber Heard, Willem Dafoe, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II and Nicole Kidman. Aside from the DCU, Momoa will also feature in Fast X later this year as the villainous Dante.

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom opens in theaters on Dec. 25.
