Jared Leto Views The Joker As ‘Nearly Shakespearean’

Jared Leto is preparing his mind and body to play The Joker in David Ayer’s “Suicide Squad” Appearing on the cover of the new issue of “Billboard,” the Oscar-winning actor — and 30 Seconds to Mars frontman — shared what drew him to the DC Comics adaptation.

“The opportunity to take on this nearly Shakespearean character — that’s what graphic novels and comic books are becoming, right?” he said. “[He’s] this beautiful disaster of a character — what a big challenge.”

Leto, a method actor who dropped nearly 40 pounds for “Dallas Buyers Club,” is also working on getting his body into shape for the physical role. “I’m trying to gain a lot of weight,” he said. “It means I have to eat every couple of hours — and I’m terrible at eating a lot.”

Opening Aug. 5, 2016, Warner Bros.’ “Suicide Squad” also stars Will Smith as Deadshot, Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, Cara Delevingne as Enchantress and Jai Courtney as Boomerang, with Joel Kinnaman reportedly in negotiations to play Rick Flag. Viola Davis is also expected to appear as Amanda Waller.
