Certain fans are convinced Morbius star Jared Leto has teased that a sequel to the 2022 Marvel film is in development at Sony Pictures.

Leto posted a picture of himself flashing a peace sign and rocking a pair of purple shades on his personal Twitter account. Fans quickly began commenting and quote-tweeting the image, declaring that the peace sign is actually a "2" for Morbius 2. The actor starred as Dr. Michael Morbius, a scientist suffering from a rare blood disease who transforms into a living vampire after he attempts to cure himself. Morbius was released in April 2022 and is set in the same universe as Sony's Venom films.

Sony has yet to officially announce a sequel to Morbius. The film received mostly negative reviews from critics and currently has a score of 17 percent on the review aggregate website Rotten Tomatoes. The audience score is much higher at 71 percent, and fans have shown their support for the film online using the hashtag #MorbiusSweep. Unfortunately, Morbius failed to light up the box office. The film holds the record for the highest second-week drop for a superhero blockbuster. At the time of writing, Morbius has grossed $73 million at the domestic box office and $163 million worldwide against a reported budget between $75 and $83 million.

Marvel fans are not the only ones hoping for or expecting a Morbius 2. Matt Smith, who stars in the film as Lucien/Milo, previously stated that he believes Leto's Morbius is "a new Marvel character for [audiences] to sink their teeth into." He continued, "I'm sure Michael Morbius will be one that will keep returning, so hopefully it opens up a new world which will continue in multiple films beyond this."

Adria Arjona has also teased the possiblity of her Morbius character, Martine Bancroft, appearing in future films after the scientist turned into a vampire at the end of the film. "I got the script, and when I got to that moment [where Bancroft becomes a vampire], I was so excited because it changes everything for her," Arjona said in April 2022. "It adds a bunch of question marks to her future, so I’m excited to see where Martine will go. Now that she has turned, I want to know if she goes more towards good or bad. Or does she have trouble finding the middle ground? What happens to her? I’m just curious. I’m as curious as the fans will be."

The post-credit scenes in Morbius hinted at a future team-up between Michael Keaton's Adrian Toomes/Vulture and Leto's Morbius. Fans believe Sony is using the scene to tease a possible film focused on the Sinister Six, an antagonistic team that originated from the comics and comprised of Spider-Man villains. A Sinister Six project was in the works at Sony between 2013 and 2015, but the studio has not yet confirmed whether the project is back in development at this time.

Morbius is now available to own on Digital. The film releases on 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray and DVD on June 14.
