Japanese 'Independence Day: Resurgence' poster calls in Gundam

Earth's landmarks are featured prominently in the posters for "Independence Day: Resurgence," the sequel to the 1996 blockbuster, with an enormous alien ship destroying Big Ben, the Eiffel Tower and more. But in Japan, the Statue of Liberty has been replaced by the Unicorn Gundam, which clearly has had enough of this extraterrestrial menace.

Alas, there's no Gundam in "Independence Day." Instead, it's merely a co-promotion in the build-up to the film's July 9 premiere in Japan.

That said, "Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn" author Harutoshi Fukui insists the two properties are kindred spirits.

"Our two works are connected like soul brothers by the theme of humanity's indomitable spirit pushing despair aside," he wrote, according to Anime News Network. "The enemy this time may be reeeeally big, but humans won't lose! The Unicorn Gundam will help too! (In our hearts.)"

"Independence Day: Resurgence" opens Friday in North America.
