Details surrounding James Wan's upcoming horror film have slowly surfaced since the project's reveal in July. While we may not know much about the plot or specific character details, we do know what the film will be called.

Wan revealed the title of his new film on Instagram. The post featured an image of a clapperboard with the title of the film painted across it. The image was accompanied by the announcement that principal photography had begun. "First day of principal photography on the 10th feature film of my career," Wan wrote, before revealing, "Malignant is the official title. Really excited for this one."

In 2011, James Wan published a graphic novel, Malignant Man. While there are obvious similarities in the name, Wan clarified in the comments of his recent Instagram post that the upcoming film is in fact, not an adaptation of the graphic novel.

The Australian filmmaker has a long history with horror films ranging from his directorial debut in 2004's Saw to his work within the highly successful Conjuring film universe. Wan briefly stepped away from the genre to direct the critically and financially successful superhero film, Aquaman. He is set to return to the DCEU for the Aquaman sequel in 2020, after his work on Malignant is finished.
