Warner Bros. Pictures released the first trailer for Malignant, the latest original horror film by Saw, Insidious and The Conjuring director James Wan.

The trailer centers on Madison (Annabelle Wallis), a woman tormented by terrifying visions of grisly murders. However, when she discovers her waking nightmares are happening in the real world, Madison sets out to uncover the truth behind "Gabriel," the malevolent and seemingly paranormal entity that's not only responsible for these killings but has haunted Madison since she was a child.

Malignant, which has nothing to do with Wan's 2011 graphic novel Malignant Man, is based on a story Wan penned with the film's screenwriter, Akela Cooper, and Ingrid Bisu. Cooper previously wrote episodes of the TV series American Horror Story, Luke Cage and Jupiter's Legacy, in addition to serving as a story editor on Grimm and The 100. She also scripted the developing horror movies M3GAN and The Nun 2, the latter of which is a sequel to the 2018 Conjuring prequel/spinoff about the demon Valak.

Joining Wallis in Malignant's cast are Maddie Hasson (Mr. Mercedes), George Young (Containment), Michole Briana White (Dead to Me), Jacqueline McKenzie (Palm Beach), Jake Abel (Supernatural) and Bisu (The Nun). Behind the camera, the movie reunites Wan with many of his trusted collaborators, including cinematographer Don Burgess and editor Kirk Morri (The Conjuring 2), production designer Desma Murphy (art director on Aquaman and Furious 7) and The Conjuring franchise composer Joseph Bishara.

On top of co-creating the Saw, Insidious and The Conjuring franchises, Wan helmed the 2007 horror/thriller Dead Silence about a young widower who investigates the death of his wife and its link to a creepy ventriloquist doll created by a mysterious woman named Mary Shaw. Wan is currently readying to begin production on Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, a DC Extended Universe adventure that reunites the director with the stars of 2018's Aquaman, including his Insidious and The Conjuring lead actor Patrick Wilson.

As with so many films releasing in 2021, Malignant was slated to arrive in 2020 before being delayed by the ongoing coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. Instead, it will simultaneously bow in theaters and begin streaming on HBO Max for a limited period of time, starting Sept. 10.
