Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema released a new trailer for James Wan's latest horror film, Malignant.

The trailer begins with a woman named Madison (Annabelle Wallis) watching a videotape of one of her childhood birthday parties. During the party, Maddie's mother questions who she's talking to, to which Maddie replies "Gabriel." The trailer then cuts to Wan, who says he wanted "to do something different, yet hark back to my roots. You gotta take chances. If you don't, you end up making the same thing again and again and again. I think audiences are starved for something that's new and different." After Wan's commentary, the trailer returns to Maddie as she revisits her past to try to uncover the truth about Gabriel.

Malignant was announced in July 2019, hailing from a screenplay by Akela Cooper and J.T. Petty based on an original story by Wan and Ingrid Bisu. In addition to Wallis, the film stars George Young, Jake Abel, Maddie Hasson, Michole Briana White, Jacqueline McKenzie and McKenna Grace. Production began in October 2019 and wrapped two months later.

Wan took the opportunity to make Malignant in the time between DC Films' Aquaman and its forthcoming sequel. Speaking to IGN in July, he said, "I wanted to make a movie in between those two giant films, which, just something smaller, more intimate, and really harken back to the style of filmmaking or the kind of films that excited me when I was when much younger, when I was a teen growing up, idolizing filmmakers like De Palma, Argento, and all that. I just thought, ‘When am I ever going to get the chance to do a film like this ever again? Now is the time for me to use this opportunity to make the kind of movies that I don't think really get made at this level anymore.’ And so it really came from the want to just make a hark back, a throwback kind of film. And this was just a story that I came about that really fit that desire."

Directed by James Wan, Malignant arrives in theaters and on HBO Max Sept. 10.
