Warner Bros.' so-called DC Extended Universe by fans will expand further in December with Aquaman, followed next year by Shazam! and Wonder Woman 1984. However, it's not only DC's heavy-hitters that are heading to the big screen.

Margot Robbie will reprise her role as Harley Quinn in director Cathy Yan's Birds of Prey, joined by fan-favorite heroes like Black Canary, Huntress and Renee Montoya. While none of those characters is a stranger to the spotlight, the film will finally place Bat-Family character Cassandra Cain front and center.

In the comics, writer James Tynion IV crafted a significant portion of Cassandra's life in Batman & Robin Eternal and Detective Comics. So when CBR spoke with him at New York Comic Con, we had to ask him about the character heading to the big screen.

"Cassandra is one of my favorite characters," Tynion said. "All the way back in Batman [& Robin] Eternal we were able to bring her back into continuity, and then being able to write her for two years in Detective Comics. ... She is a character that means a lot to a lot of people."

While the landscape of the DCEU is still undergoing changes, the writer said the idea of having the young heroine play a prominent role is exciting. "For a whole new generation of characters, we are going to see a bunch of people who have a DC Universe where she is absolutely at the core of it, and that's great."

Introduced in 1999 by Kelley Puckett and Damion Scott, Cassandra Cain is the child of Lady Shiva and David Cain. Like her parents, Cassandra is a talented hand-to-hand combatant and arguably the most dangerous member of the Batman family; she was raised by her father to become the ultimate assassin, after all. Her brutal training turned her into a living weapon, but it meant never teaching her social skills, which is something she began to learn as she grew closer to Batman and his allies. Instead of learning how to read and write, she learned how to read body language, which allows her to predict her opponents' moves, making her so formidable that she's even casually dodged the Dark Knight's strikes.

Targeted for release on Feb. 7, 2020, director Cathy Yan's Birds of Prey so far stars Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, Jurnee Smollett-Bell as Black Canary, Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Huntress and Rosie Perez as Renee Montoya.
