It looks like the enigmatic Robert California will be leaving Sabre, or at least the company's Scranton office. According to Deadline, James Spader won't be returning next season to NBC's The Office.
Executive Producer Paul Lieberstein (aka Toby Flenderson) said that the idea from the beginning was to have Spader for just one season. "James always wanted this to be a one-year arc, and he now leaves us having created one of the most enigmatic and dynamic characters in television,” he said. “He’s been a great friend to me and the show, helping us successfully transition into the post-Michael Scott years, and I’m grateful for that.”
Spader's Robert California came in not to replace Steve Carrell's Michael Scott -- that job went to Ed Helms' Andy Bernard -- but he did bring charisma as the Sabre CEO whose marriage fell apart, leading into one of the coolest house parties in Office history.
