James McAvoy and Bill Hader are both reportedly in talks to star in It: Chapter 2 in key roles.
According to Variety, McAvoy is being considered for the role of Bill Denbrough, while Hader would play Richie Tozier. The younger versions of these characters were portrayed by Jaeden Lieberher and Finn Wolfhard, respectively, in the 2017 adaptation of Stephen King's novel from 1986, It. The pair would join a cast featuring Oscar nominee Jessica Chastain, who has also been in talks to star as Beverly Marsh in the sequel.
McAvoy is best known for portraying a younger version of Charles Xavier in the rebooted X-Men films, while Hader is best known for his comedic roles, appearing on Saturday Night Live from 2005 through 2013.
It: Chapter 2 will adapt the second half of King's novel, which follows The Losers' Club as adults as they experience their second encounter with the terrifying Pennywise, nearly 30 years after the events of the first film. Director Andy Muschietti will be returning to helm the second chapter, while It co-writer Gary Dauberman is writing the script. Bill Skarsgard is also expected to reprise his role as Pennywise the Dancing Clown.
It earned $700.4 million in its run at the box office, becoming the highest-grossing horror movie and third-highest grossing R-rated film of all time. The sequel has a scheduled release date of Sept. 6, 2019, with filming set to begin this summer.
