The jury has rejected the death penalty and sentenced James Holmes to life in prison for his 2012 theater shooting, which killed 12 people in a movie theater in Aurora, Colorado during a screening of "The Dark Knight Rises." According to The New York Times, Holmes accepted the sentencing with little emotion.

Holmes entered a midnight screening of "The Dark Knight Rises" in 2012 through an exit door he had propped open earlier in the day. Wearing a gas mask, gloves and protective gear, Holmes opened fire on the audience, killing 12 people and injuring 70 more.

Defense attorneys presented the jury with the argument that Holmes was innocent due to being insane at the time of the shooting; the jury rejected that claim, finding Holmes guilty on all charges.

With a guilty verdict, Holmes was eligible for the death sentence. Under Colorado law, if just one juror votes against the death penalty, Holmes will be sentenced to life in prison. The state has executed just one person since 1976.
