James Gunn recently confirmed that he and Peter Safran, the new co-heads of DC Studios, will be revealing their plans for the DC Universe going forward sometime within the next two months.In response to a fan on Twitter, Gunn confirmed reports that they're nearly set to reveal their plans for the DC film franchise, but made it clear that the only recipients of that information for now will be the Warner Bros. Discovery executives. For the rest of the world's DC movie fans, it will be a longer wait. This lines up with comments Warner Bros. Writer/director Gunn and producer Safran were announced as the co-chairs and co-CEOs of the new DC Studios in October 2022, to serve as DC's Kevin Feige-like figures and unify the film, television and animation arms of DC media at Warner Bros. Discovery. DC Studios officially replaces DC Films, which is shuttering with the departure of its former president, Walter Hamada. Gunn is responsible for the creative side of the studio, while Safran is overseeing the business side.

From Marvel to DC

Gunn recently confirmed that he will still work as a director alongside his job at DC Studios, although he will be limited to DC projects for at least 4 years due to an exclusivity contract. Gunn has previously written and directed The Suicide Squad and the HBO Max spinoff series Peacemaker. Other than Peacemaker's upcoming second season, Gunn's future projects for DC are yet to be announced, although rumors are circling about various DC characters he has publicly expressed interest in over the years.

His remaining Guardians of the Galaxy films, Vol. 3 and the Holiday Special, are therefore his final Marvel Studios projects for the foreseeable future, with Gunn confirming that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 was always intended to be the end of that series. Kevin Feige recently expressed his support for Gunn's new career move, saying that "I'll be first in line to see anything he does."

The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special arrives on Disney+ on Nov. 25, and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 comes to theaters on May 5, 2023.
