Long before Guardians of the Galaxy, filmmaker James Gunn wrote the screenplay for the 2000 superhero comedy The Specials, which, after two decades, is finally coming to Blu-Ray.

The release comes courtesy of La-La Land Entertainment. Dubbed a "special" 20th Anniversary limited edition, this Blu-Ray will see The Specials released in high-definition for the first time. This release will also be the first time The Specials is presented in lossless 5.0 & 2.0 audio. The Blu-Ray comes adorned with a brand new piece of cover art painted by artist Paul Shipper.

Bonus features for the release include an audio commentary from 2000 by director Craig Mazin, writer and actor James Gunn, producer Mark A. Altman and visual effects supervisor Mojo as well as another audio commentary track from 2005 by Gunn and actress Paget Brewster. Additionally, the release comes with a 1080p transfer of the theatrical trailer for The Specials, deleted scenes and behind-the-scenes photos.

Originally released in September 2000, The Specials is a comedy about a group of oddball superheroes who yearn for respect as both costumed crime-fighters and as everyday people. Among their troubles is the team's difficulty in securing a lucrative toy deal and extramarital affairs between members of the titular superhero group.

Directed by Craig Mazin, The Specials starred Thomas Haden Church, James Gunn, Rob Lowe, Jamie Kennedy, Judy Greer, Sean Gunn, Paget Brewster, Jordan Ladd, Jim Zulevic, and Kelly Coffield. The first-ever Blu-Ray release for The Specials arrives on lalalandrecords.com and other online retailers on July 14.
