DC Studios co-head James Gunn has seemingly teased a more prominent role for the Green Lanterns moving forward in the DC Universe.Gunn recently celebrated American Thanksgiving on Twitter, sharing a picture of several notable DC heroes enjoying a Thanksgiving feast. One fan noticed that Green Lantern was absent in the image and remarked, "No Green Lantern in this image therefore I can confidently claim that Gunn and Safran have no intention of adding that character into the DCU, this is a scoop [I] am 100% confident in." This resulted in Gunn replying to the fan, "Probably not a good scoop! Happy Thanksgiving!" At the time of writing, it is unknown what Gunn and [Peter] Safran may be planning for the Green Lantern Corps.RELATED: New Gods: Tom King Opens Up About His and Ava DuVernay's Canceled DC Film

Outside a handful of animated movies, 2011's Green Lantern, starring Ryan Reynolds, has been the only live-action film featuring the Green Lantern Corps. The film opened to negative reviews and severely underperformed at the box office, grossing $219 million against a production budget of $200 million. Warner Bros. had hoped to launch a shared universe with Green Lantern, but those plans were scrapped following the film's critical and commercial failure. The DCU officially started two years later with Zack Snyder's Man of Steel (2013).

Following the successful launch of the DCU with Man of Steel, Warner Bros. announced in July 2015 that Green Lantern Corps, a feature-length film starring the Green Lanterns Hal Jordan and John Stewart, would be released in June 2020. However, the project languished in development and was later removed from WB's release calendar. So far, the only Green Lantern to appear in a DCU film is Yalan Gur, who briefly appeared in both cuts of Justice League.

Green Lantern TV Show Goes Back to Square One

In addition to a possible DCU future, the Green Lanterns are set to appear in an upcoming self-titled live-action series on HBO Max. The project -- developed by Greg Berlanti and his Warner Bros. TV-based Berlanti Productions -- recently underwent a massive creative overhaul, losing writer/showrunner Seth Grahame-Smith and leads Finn Wittrock and Jeremy Irvine. The series has also shifted its focus from Green Lanterns Guy Gardner and Alan Scott to fan-favorite John Stewart.

The creative overhaul was reportedly unconnected to Gunn and Safran's recent appointment as co-chairs and co-CEOs of DC Studios. At the time of writing, it is unknown if HBO Max's Green Lantern series will be merged with the DCU as Gunn and Safran are currently finalizing a long-term plan for the DCU that will extend into movies, television and animation.
