James Gunn's upcoming Superman film has received an official title and a release date.Now titled Superman: Legacy, the upcoming superhero film will open in theaters on July 11, 2025, as the first film in Chapter 1 of the DC Universe. Gunn announced the release date in a video message that he shared on his personal Twitter account. Superman: Legacy was first announced in December 2022, with Gunn confirmed to be writing the screenplay. So far, the DC Studios co-CEO has revealed that the film will not be an origin story but will begin with Clark Kent already established as Superman and working at the Daily Planet. Henry Cavill will not return as the Man of Steel, with Gunn stating that a younger actor will be cast in the title role once the screenplay has been written.

Gunn Announces Four More DC Films

Gunn also revealed four additional movies that will comprise the first wave of films released during Chapter 1 of the DCU, which has been titled Gods and Monsters. Gunn has outlined a film adaptation of The Authority, a superhero team mainly composed of Warren Ellis-created characters from Stormwatch. A new Batman film -- The Brave and the Bold -- is on the way, which will be unconnected to Matt Reeves' The Batman Universe. The upcoming Caped Crusader flick will focus on Batman discovering he has fathered a son, Damian Wayne, with Talia al Ghul. Supergirl: World of Tomorrow and Swamp Thing were also announced, with the latter set to be the first DCU horror movie.

DC Studios is reportedly aiming to release two new movies and two new television shows every year, beginning in 2025. Television series that are currently in development include Creature Commandos, an animated series written by Gunn that will bring back The Suicide Squad's Weasel; Waller, a live-action series starring Viola Davis' A.R.G.U.S. officer Amanda Waller that takes place between Peacemaker Seasons 1 and 2; Lanterns, featuring both the Hal Jordan and John Stewart Green Lanterns; Paradise Lost, a political drama set on Themyscira before the events of Gal Gadot's Wonder Woman movies; and Booster Gold, about the glory-seeking superhero from the future. Creature Commandos and Waller are expected to be the first DCU series released during Chapter 1.

Superman: Legacy will be the first film to release under the new DCU, hitting theaters on July 11, 2025.
