DC Studios co-head James Gunn has debunked a rumor surrounding the Man of Steel's upcoming return to the silver screen, Superman: Legacy, while also providing an update about the DC Universe project, which he will write and direct. The rumor in question surrounds a Spanish-language post on Twitter claiming that a casting notice was sent to talent agencies for Legacy and that the characters include Clark Kent, Lois Lane and Jimmy Olsen. The post also noted that the ages were in the early twenties and casting was open to all ethnicities. When showed the post, Gunn replied, "Untrue. We haven't begun casting other than making lists, and it's not limited to people in their twenties." Prior to this, Gunn debunked similar reports claiming that actors aged 20 to 30 were called upon to try out for the role of the eponymous Last Son of Krypton, stating that a casting director hadn't even been hired yet.RELATED: James Gunn Will Direct Superman, Reveals the Release Date's Special Meaning

Regarding Superman's age in the DCU, Gunn previously explained that the Metropolis Marvel was "younger than in his forties" while adding that his fellow DC hero Batman could be a couple of years older due to speculation on the topic. The Dark Knight, of course, will have his own DCU movie in the form of The Brave and the Bold, which will take cues from Grant Morrison's story arc "Batman and Son."

Superman: Legacy Is Not an Origin Story

As for Legacy itself, it was revealed by Gunn and his co-chairman Peter Safran in January that the film won't be an origin story, with Gunn noting, "[Superman: Legacy] focuses on Superman balancing his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing." Safran himself went on to add, "Superman represents truth, justice and the American way. He is kindness in a world that thinks of kindness as old fashioned." Beyond Gunn's words, no other plot details for Legacy have been made publicly available.

On the topic of how Superman will be portrayed in the DCU, Gunn said, "I really love the idea of Superman. He's a big ol' galoot. He's a farmboy from Kansas who's very idealistic. His greatest weakness is that he'll never kill anybody. He doesn't want to hurt a living soul. I like that sort of innate goodness about Superman; it's his defining characteristic. He's not [the] All-Star Superman [version of the character], but again, I'm a huge fan of All-Star Superman, and I'm very inspired by [that comic book series]."

Superman: Legacy arrives in theaters faster than a speeding bullet on July 11, 2025.
