Despite being one of the last remaining DC Comics shows on The CW, DC Studios co-head James Gunn says that Superman & Lois has one or two more seasons left in it at the most.

At the press event for the DC Universe's slate unveiling, Gunn and fellow co-head Peter Safran spent some time discussing the status of Superman & Lois, as reported via Variety, ahead of the show's March-premiering third season. While the duo acknowledged that the show will likely continue for "one or two more seasons," their language regarding anything beyond that didn't seem too optimistic, especially given the ambitious scope of the reorganized DCU. As Gunn continued, "It's a show everybody likes, so it's going to keep going for a little bit."

The CW's Shrinking Slate of DC Shows

Regardless, the news should be promising for fans of the series since its post-Season 3 fate appeared to be in limbo for various reasons. Alongside the ninth and final season of The Flash and the debut of Gotham Knights, which premieres on March 14, it is the last of the DC footprint on The CW. Indeed, the network is moving away from original scripted programming in a big way due to the Nexstar Media Group acquisition, which gave the company a majority stake in the former youth-skewing home for past Arrowverse shows.

Season 3 of Superman & Lois will see the arrival of iconic DC villain Lex Luthor, which is set to be portrayed by The Walking Dead's Michael Cudlitz. According to the character's official description, "When Lex debuts this season, it's been years since he dropped out of the public eye and he's re-emerging hellbent on correcting a personal injustice by enacting revenge on the two people he feels have wronged him — Superman (Tyler Hoechlin) and Lois Lane (Elizabeth Tulloch)."

Superman & Lois was developed by Todd Helbing and Greg Berlanti, based on the DC Comics characters Superman and Lois Lane, created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster. The series starts with Clark Kent/Superman (Hoechlin) and Lois Lane (Tulloch) returning to Smallville with their sons Jonathan (Jordan Elsass in Seasons 1-2, Michael Bishop in Season 3) and Jordan (Alex Garfin), where they become reacquainted with Lana Lang (Emmanuelle Chriqui) and her family. Life is idyllic for all involved until it's all upended when The Stranger (Wole Parks) and Morgan Edge (Adam Rayner) enter their lives.

Season 2 of the series saw Superman experiencing painful visions that leads to the Man of Steel encountering Bizarro (also played by Hoechlin), who is his Inverse-World counterpart. In addition to this threat, Lois has to deal with the Inverse Method cult led by Ally Allston (Rya Kihlstedt). Season 3 will begin weeks after Superman's defeat of Ally Allston at the end of Season 2.

Superman & Lois Season 3 premieres on March 14 on The CW.
