James Gunn reveals to fans what DC Comics characters almost made it into his vision for The Suicide Squad.

The director posted onto Twitter that while he was still debating taking on writing the film, he had a folder of characters he considered joining Task Force X in his vision of the movie. Some of these picks ranged from lesser known characters such as the Rainbow Creature to popular fan favorites like Deathstroke.

One of the larger names on the list, Deathstroke has already been portrayed in the DCEU by Joe Manganiello in Justice League (2017) and the recent version of the film, Zack Snyder's Justice League (2021). Manganiello was set to reprise the role in a canceled solo film and Ben Affleck's Batman movie, neither of which are slated to happen for now. However, the mercenary is not the only character on Gunn's list that has had a live action appearance.

Also sparking on the Twitter thread was Livewire, who was portrayed by Brit Morgan in the Supergirl television series. The villain appeared in three seasons before getting killed off helping the hero. The director also considered popular Batman villain Mr. Freeze as well as Killer Frost, who is currently played by Danielle Panabaker on The Flash, but there are many other characters on Gunn's list that have not had recent or any live action appearances.

Fans almost got to see other characters such as Man-Bat, KGBeast, Solomon Grundy and others. However, according to to the director, they would not have fit in for what he envisioned. "Every character in #TheSuicideSquad was chosen for a purpose, great or small, and although I love many of these other characters, they didn't serve the story quite as well."

Another revelation came when one fan asked Gunn about Idris Elba possibly playing Bronze Tiger, which was rumored instead of his character Bloodsport. "Yes, I considered him," Gunn responded. "But I was pretty much only using actual villains (other than Flag), so I ruled him out pretty early."

Gunn has not ruled out using these characters for another film, however. "I am of course open to using them in the future. And there are many more wonderful @DCComics characters where these came from." It is unclear if Gunn will be making another Suicide Squad film at this time.

Written and directed by James Gunn, The Suicide Squad stars Viola Davis as Amanda Waller, Joel Kinnaman as Rick Flag, Michael Rooker as Savant, Flula Borg as Javelin, David Dastmalchian as Polka-Dot Man, Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, Daniela Melchior as Ratcatcher 2, Idris Elba as Bloodsport, Mayling NG as Mongal, Peter Capaldi as The Thinker, Alice Braga as Solsoria, Sylvester Stallone as King Shark, Pete Davidson as Blackguard, Nathan Fillion as TDK, Sean Gunn as Weasel, Jai Courtney as Captain Boomerang and John Cena as Peacemaker, with Steve Agee, Taika Waititi and Storm Reid.
