James Gunn has commented on his upcoming The Suicide Squad movie and has revealed that it will be "no holds barred."

"100% more shark (and no holds barred in any way)," Gunn tweeted in response to a fan asking what made The Suicide Squad different from prior James Gunn movies. Another fan asked what he meant by "no holds barred," which Gunn clarified. "No holds barred means I wasn't constrained by the formulas of most tentpole films OR budget OR rating. YES sometimes those constraints can be a help, so I was committed to first [and] foremost telling a tight story about unlovable characters we could love," Gunn said.

This mirrors other comments Gunn has made about the creative freedom he was offered while making The Suicide Squad. "[The Suicide Squad] is fully finished and cut and I made every single choice and they never once even slightly interfered. They gave very few notes -- they were usually good and minor and I took them if I wanted to and didn't if I didn't want to," Gunn said. "Warners was creatively amazing."

Written and directed by James Gunn, The Suicide Squad stars Margot Robbie, Idris Elba, John Cena, Joel Kinnaman, Jai Courtney, Peter Capaldi, David Dastmalchian, Daniela Melchior, Michael Rooker, Alice Braga, Pete Davidson, Joaquín Cosio, Juan Diego Botto, Storm Reid, Nathan Fillion, Steve Agee, Sean Gunn, Mayling Ng, Flula Borg, Jennifer Holland and Tinashe Kajese, with Sylvester Stallone and Viola Davis. The film arrives in theaters and on HBO Max Aug. 6, 2021.
