UPDATE: James Gunn has said a recent story about Silver Surfer and Galactus appearing in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is a hoax. The story involved an image that appeared to be from the director's Instagram Story, but it is a fake. Below is Gunn's response followed by the original story:

There's a chance that the Silver Surfer and Galactus may make their MCU debut in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

While answering questions in his Instagram Story, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 director James Gunn was asked about the inclusion of Silver Surfer and Galactus. While Gunn didn't provide a concrete yes or no, he did admit that talks have occurred involving the characters.

With Disney's purchase of 20th Century Fox, the Marvel Cinematic Universe now finally has access to not just the X-Men and the Fantastic Four but heavy-hitters Galactus and his most famous herald, the Silver Surfer. While both have made appearances on the big screen before, it's only a matter of time before Kevin Feige introduces the MCU's take on the popular characters. And with Gunn's Guardians of the Galaxy exploring all things cosmic in the Marvel universe, it makes sense that the hero and villain could make a cameo or even play a larger role.

Of course, the upcoming film already has a lot on its plate. Aside from the core characters being further explored, Thor may be sticking around as part of the team. And Gunn has teased the MCU debut of Adam Warlock, a powerful cosmic character in his own right. With all of that, there may be precious little time to introduce two iconic characters like Silver Surfer and Galactus. But with Gunn famous for including Easter eggs and teases, the end of the film could tee up the pair for a future film.

Written and directed by James Gunn, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 does not currently have a release date. The film is reportedly scheduled to begin production in February 2021.
