James Gunn loves putting Easter eggs in his films. Whether it’s the Chitauri soldier inside The Collector’s glass case or his own dog in Peter Quill’s vision of Morag, Gunn is known for creating a world filled with Easter eggs that are relevant to the Marvel Universe and his own personal life.
Ever since “Guardians of the Galaxy” was released in theaters back in 2014, fans have been trying to find all of Gunn’s Easter eggs, and regularly ask him about them on Facebook and Twitter. Today Gunn turned the tables a bit, and instead of letting fans present him with Easter eggs from the film, he presented the fans with one via Facebook.
According to Gunn, Groot was meant to have a “Last Supper” scene while gambling at Nowhere. The scene was cut, but the frame was mostly finished, and Gunn shared it today. In the image, Groot sits at the center of a table, surrounded by 11 friends. This is an exact reenactment of Jesus sitting at the Last Supper with 11 of his disciples. “The Last Supper” was originally painted at the end of the 1400s by Leonardo da Vinci, and is considered one of the most famous pieces of art in the world.
James Gunn is currently filming “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” in Atlanta. “Guardians Vol. 2” arrives in theaters May 5, 2017.
