DC Studios co-CEO and co-chairman James Gunn confirmed there are no plans to bring Robert Pattinson's Dark Knight from The Batman into the DC Universe. In response to a post on Twitter from Variety regarding news of Pattinson's Batman joining the DCU, Gunn stated, "There are few reporters I love more than [Senior Entertainment Writer for Variety Adam B. Vary] - truly a good guy - but in this case he needs to get a new source as this is entirely untrue." Interestingly, The Batman was originally meant to be part of the DC Universe, though director and co-writer Matt Reeves didn't want it to be. Pattinson himself also spoke about the problem of having Superman in the same universe as his version of the Caped Crusader, saying, "We've been talking about how to get the fantastical elements because [director and co-writer Matt Reeves'] world, his take on it is so grounded, and I'm thinking like, 'How can you add...?' Like, we were talking the other day, like, 'Can you add Superman into it but he just doesn't have any powers? He's just a guy in a cape?' He's just like, 'I'm Superman!' And they're like, 'So?'" Pattinson's co-star and Selina Kyle/Catwoman actor Zoë Kravitz added to this by noting that the worlds of both characters "kind of just don't work together," though ironically, the Man of Steel's archenemy, Lex Luthor, was confirmed to exist in the Batman universe in the prequel novel Before the Batman: An Original Movie Novel (The Batman).

The Batman Exists in Its Own DC Universe

While The Batman may not become a part of the DCU, Gunn recently confirmed the film will still be under the creative control of DC Studios. Gunn also noted that he and Reeves discussed DC Studios becoming a reality, with Reeves being one of Gunn's first phone calls after it was announced.

The Batman will launch its own shared universe. Aside from the upcoming Penguin limited series on HBO Max and a sequel to the movie itself, Reeves is also developing a series of movies focused on Batman's enemies and has talked to HBO Max about doing a Catwoman spinoff series.
