James Gunn reveals that another three series to be released on HBO Max are in the works, alongside his most recent show, Peacemaker.

A short clip of an interview with James Gunn in which he mentions his current workload surfaced on Twitter. "We actually are working on a few different shows," the director revealed, "I'm working on like three new shows now with HBO Max network in various phases of development, but you know, the heart and soul is of course Peacemaker."

Speculation around what these other shows could be have been floating around the internet for a while in the wake of Peacemaker's season finale in early 2022. In May, it was rumored that Viola Davis was in talks to reprise her Suicide Squad and Peacemaker role as Amanda Waller in a spinoff series. "There's a lot of stories out there about what's happening," Gunn said in response to the rumor, "and some of them are accurate, some of them are not."

In June, The Suicide Squad writer/director teased a mystery project with a photo of Peter Capaldi in costume as The Thinker, which Gunn captioned, "I can't wait to tell you all the big plans we currently have in play." The director has also hinted at the return of Suicide Squad character Weasel, played by his brother, Sean. Whether this reappearance will be in a TV show or movie has not been disclosed.

Known for directing horror/mystery movies such as Scooby Doo and Slither in his early career, Gunn broke into the world of comic book cinema with his adaptation of Guardians of the Galaxy in 2014 (in which his brother, Sean, also had a role). He went on to direct the following GotG movie and will remain in the driver's seat for the third installment. Moving from the MCU to the DCEU, Gunn took on the task of giving the Suicide Squad title another go after the underperforming 2016 attempt by David Ayer. It was here that Gunn first had a chance to work with John Cena as Peacemaker before choosing to create a series with him as the eponymous star. For his portrayal of the nationalist anti-hero, the actor was nominated for Best Comedic Performance at the MTV Movie & TV Awards.

Season 1 of Peacemaker is available to stream on HBO Max.
