Director James Gunn has assured DC fans that Peacemaker will remain a part of the DC Extended Universe.

Gunn is known for answering fan questions on Twitter in his spare time and the writer-director recently responded to a fan asking about Peacemaker's place in the DCEU timeline. "[On] a side note will Peacemaker still be canonical in the rebooted DCEU, with Micheal Keaton’s Batman and stuff," the fan posted, referencing Michael Keaton's upcoming role as Bruce Wayne/Batman in The Flash and Batgirl. The Flash is rumored to involve a story tied to the DC Multiverse that will reboot, retcon and streamline the DCEU timeline. Gunn, however, put any fears to rest when he wrote back to the fan, "Yes, Peacemaker is still and will continue to be DCEU."

Peacemaker is a spinoff of Gunn's 2021 film The Suicide Squad. The series premiered in January 2022 on HBO Max and stars John Cena, reprising his role from The Suicide Squad as Christopher Smith/Peacemaker. Season 1 of the HBO Max series picks up after the events of The Suicide Squad and follows Peacemaker on a mission with the A.R.G.U.S. black ops squad Project Butterfly to identify and eliminate parasitic butterfly-like creatures who have taken over human bodies around the world. The first season consisted of eight episodes, which were written by Gunn. He also directed five episodes, with Jody Hill, Rosemary Rodriguez and Brad Anderson each handling one of the remaining episodes. HBO Max ordered a second season of Peacemaker in Feb. 2022, with Gunn set to write and direct all episodes.

Gunn's Upcoming Superhero Projects

In addition to Peacemaker Season 2, Gunn is working on two more television series set in the DCEU that are currently in "various phases of development." While it is unknown who or what the other two DC series will center on, there have been some rumors circulating online about an A.R.G.U.S. and/or Amanda Waller series. In May, it was rumored that Viola Davis was in talks to reprise her DCEU role as Amanda Waller in a spinoff series. Gunn did respond shortly after the rumor first appeared online, stating, "There's a lot of stories out there about what's happening and some of them are accurate, some of them are not." The writer-director also has two projects in post-production at Marvel Studios: The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. The holiday special will premiere on Disney+ later this year in time for Christmas while Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 opens in theaters in May 2023.

Gunn is also interested in writing and directing an R-rated live-action Scooby-Doo film when his schedule clears up, and he is less busy. The theoretical R-rated film would be a sequel to the two live-action Scooby-Doo films Warner Bros. released in the early 2000s, which starred Matthew Lillard, Freddie Prinze Jr., Sarah Michelle Gellar, and Linda Cardellini as the Mystery Incorporated gang, with Neil Fanning as the voice of the titular Great Dane.
