Peacemaker creator James Gunn has assured that the acclaimed HBO Max series' second season is still happening, and has simply been pushed back as he focuses his attention on other DC Universe projects.

On Twitter, Gunn replied to a fan asking if Peacemaker Season 2 had been canceled. "Heck no, just postponed while I work on [Superman:] Legacy," he wrote. "Waller first. [Peacemaker] after."

Created, written and co-directed by Gunn, Peacemaker Season 1 premiered on HBO Max on Jan. 13, 2022 as part of the DC Extended Universe. Starring John Cena as the eponymous anti-hero, the series is a spinoff of Gunn's 2021 DCEU film The Suicide Squad, itself a standalone sequel to David Ayer's 2016 film Suicide Squad. Peacemaker's first season ran for a total of eight episodes through Feb. 17, 2022, at which point the show was renewed for Season 2. However, this was before Gunn and fellow Peacemaker executive producer Peter Safran were named co-heads of DC Studios and tasked with charting a fresh direction for the newly-christened DC Universe.

The On-Screen DC Universe Is Headed for a Rebirth

Gunn and Safran recently announced the first 10 projects that will make up "Chapter 1" of the new DCU, including five feature films and five streaming series. Chapter 1 of the DCU is slated to kick off on July 11, 2025 with the release of the film Superman: Legacy, which is written by Gunn. On the television side of things, Gunn and Safran also announced Waller, a new series starring EGOT-winning actor Viola Davis. Davis reprises her role as Amanda Waller from Suicide Squad, The Suicide Squad, Peacemaker and Black Adam. Waller was previously confirmed to take place between Seasons 1 and 2 of Peacemaker.

The other four films Gunn and Safran announced for Chapter 1 of the DCU are The Authority, The Brave and the Bold, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow and Swamp Thing. Meanwhile, the other four streaming shows are Creature Commandos, Booster Gold, Lanterns and Paradise Lost. DC projects not belonging to the shared universe will go ahead under the studio's Elseworlds banner, such as the upcoming sequels to Matt Reeves' The Batman and Todd Phillips' Joker.

Moreover, before the new DCU begins, there's the matter of wrapping up the old DCEU. This year, four big-screen projects that were given the green light before the Gunn-Safran regime are slated for release. Shazam! Fury of the Gods is due to hit theaters on March 17, followed by The Flash on June 16. The Flash is especially noteworthy, as it's expected to serve as the catalyst for the DCU reboot. At any rate, it will itself be followed by Blue Beetle on Aug. 18. Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom will then close the year out on Dec. 25.
