DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn confirmed actor Chris Pratt will not play the Man of Steel in the upcoming DC Universe film, Superman: Legacy.Gunn discussed his plans for Superman: Legacy during the red carpet premiere of the Marvel Cinematic Universe's Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, with the acclaimed director listing the qualities he envisioned for his take on the Last Son of Krypton. "It's gotta be, you know, it's hard but we're looking and we actually have some really great choices, which I'm excited about," Gunn said. "But it has to be somebody who has, you know, all the humanity that Superman has but he's also an alien. It's gotta be somebody who has the kindness and the compassion that Superman has. It has to be somebody that you want to give you, you know, you want to give a hug. When jokingly asked if he believed that Pratt would be a suitable casting choice for his take on Superman, Gunn laughed and claimed the Guardians of the Galaxy star did not fit the role. "It's not Chris Pratt," the director replied. "If he was a few years younger, maybe." Gunn previously revealed the age range of Superman in Legacy, saying the character will be "younger than in his forties."

Will Chris Pratt Join the DCU?

While Pratt may not be in the running to portray the beloved Man of Steel, the actor previously stated that he was still open to joining Gunn in the DCU and would immediately respond if the director called for his help. However, Pratt's DCU debut might not happen in the foreseeable future, since the Guardians of the Galaxy alum also claimed he had yet to discuss the details of his transfer with Gunn in any official capacity. Pratt further revealed he was still unsure regarding what role he would play, with the actor asking fans for their suggestions regarding which character from the DC franchise would suit him.

Pratt isn't the only Guardians of the Galaxy star who was considered for a role in Gunn's DCU. The director previously hinted actors Dave Bautista, Zoe Saldaña and Karen Gillan would eventually transfer over to the DCU alongside Pratt. Pom Klementieff, who is best known for portraying Guardians of the Galaxy's Mantis, additionally claimed she was already making plans with Gunn and even had a character in mind for when she moved to the DCU.

Superman: Legacy flies into theaters on July 11, 2025.
