Filmmaker James Gunn denied rumors claiming actor Logan Lerman was cast for the role of the titular Man of Steel in the upcoming DC Universe film, Superman: Legacy.Gunn responsed to comments speculating Lerman was his "top pick" to play Superman for his planned reboot of the DCU, stating, "For the record, I don't know who that is." Gunn later clarified that his original message was not meant to offend Lerman or his fans and stated the post was only meant to address rumors of Superman's alleged casting. "Guys, this isn't a dig at the actor," the filmmaker commented. "I don't know lots of actors' names. Now that you tell me who he is, I recognize him from stuff and think he's talented. But I've never met him, and he's never been part of a conversation about playing Superman."

Gunn Debunks More Superman Rumors

Gunn previously denied reports claiming DC Studios announced a casting call for Superman: Legacy, which reportedly opened auditions for 20 to 30-year-old performers. In response, Gunn revealed it couldn't be true, being that the studio had yet to hire a casting director to oversee the project. The filmmaker additionally claimed similar reports of casting calls for the roles of Superman, Lois Lane and Jimmy Olsen were false, with Gunn revealing his team had so far only compiled lists of acceptable actors, some of whom were reportedly no longer in their twenties.

Details concerning the upcoming reboot remain scarce. However, it is known Gunn himself will be taking on a directorial role for Superman: Legacy. Gunn additionally revealed Superman: Legacy's scheduled premiere date was personally significant, as it was also the birthday of his late father. "I lost my Dad almost three years ago," Gunn explained. "He was my best friend. He didn't understand me as a kid, but he supported my love of comics and my love of film and I wouldn't be making this movie now without him."

Superman: Legacy flies into theaters on July 11, 2025.
