A young Guardians of the Galaxy fan came up with an interesting theory involving Baby Groot, to which director James Gunn has since confirmed.One Twitter user wrote, "My 7-year old has concluded that the pot Baby Groot is eating his candy out of... is the same one he was growing in. Is she right?" Gunn responded, "I like that theory, so let's say yes. And you can tell your 7-year-old she invented it."Â
Voiced by Vin Diesel, Groot was introduced to the Marvel Cinematic Universe in 2014's Guardians of the Galaxy, which saw the character sacrifice himself to save the other Guardians. However, a new Groot (Baby Groot) ended up growing from a piece of the original and would go on to play a big role in 2017's Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. This version of Groot would also make appearances in both 2018's Avengers: Infinity War and 2019's Avengers: Endgame.
At one point, it was debated whether Baby Groot was actually a reincarnation of the original, or a completely new character with Gunn eventually confirming the latter. The character is expected to return for the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, which has yet to begin pre-production.
Written and directed by James Gunn, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 currently has no release date. The film is expected to begin production in February 2021.
